From the Spokesman?newspaper:
As the debate over Idaho Gov. Butch Otter?s proposed state health insurance exchange heats up, a North Idaho senator has sent out a mass email and posted a message on Twitter comparing the role of insurance companies to ?the Jews boarding the trains to concentration camps,? saying the federal government is using private insurers and in the future will ?pull the trigger? on them.
Sen. Sheryl Nuxoll, R-Cottonwood, defends her analogy. ?I just want people to hear the truth and to be aware that what is being presented before us is a socialistic program,? Nuxoll said Wednesday. ?There is no disrespect for any group or people with the analogy. ? I just want people to know the truth.?
Nuxoll went on to defend her comments, saying ?I felt badly for the Jews.? ?Apparently so badly that she chose to co-opt and mangle their history.
Ah, Republicans. ?Not only can you count on them to make a ridiculous Hitler comparison about pretty much anything President Obama does, but true to form, for Republicans, Hitler?s victims weren?t people ? they were corporations. ?Because kids, as everyone knows, corporations are people. And apparently, now they?re Jewish people.
Yes, the world will never forget the six million limited equity partnerships that Hitler destroyed.
Idaho Republican state Senator Sheryl Nuxoll thinks Obamacare is ?socialist? (of course) and that it?s also 1940s-socialism?s greatest enemy, Hitler. ?Any student of history knows that the Soviets and Hitler may have started off as friends, but ended up as arch-enemies, and that the Soviets played a key role in beating Hitler. ?But Republicans don?t let historical inaccuracies and contradictions get in the way of a good smear.
And in defense of Senator Nuxoll, everyone knows that World War II was really about Hitler?s crazy plan to provide affordable healthcare to working-class Jews, or ?Hitlercare,? as it was known in everyday parlance.
Now, I?m not a big fan of the ?don?t ever invoke Hitler? club. ?While most invocations of the Holocaust are simply nutty, if we have a blanket policy that every invocation of the Holocaust is flat-out wrong, and that we should never ever compare anything to Nazi Germany, then what we?re really saying is that the Holocaust was so unique that it could never happen again. ?So don?t worry about it. ?And I don?t buy that. I think historians of Hitler?s rise would tell you that it?s quite an interesting story to look at, the gradual nazification of the country, and the step-by-step demonization, and de-humanization, of Jews.
That lesson of the danger of incremental-evil is not a bad one. ?And I worry sometimes that these blanket calls to never invoke Germany might lead us to assume that it could never happen again.
Having said that, Nuxoll?s comments, that insurance companies are like Jews about to be gassed, is simply bizarre and offensive. ?Though it does provide a wonderful window into the soul of the modern Republican party. ?To Republicans, corporations that stop people from getting life-saving health care are the ?victims. ?And the corporations? victims, people without (or with insufficient and costly) health care, are the Nazis.
That?s about all you need to know about the extremists who control the GOP.
