Wednesday morning Republican lawmakers began what they say will be a transparent and open process of passing new mining permit legislation.
"Passing a mining bill that protects the environment and creates jobs is one of our top priorities this legislative session," said State Representative Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford).
Under its provisions, the DNR would have up to 480 days to issue a mining permit. People could challenge that permit, but not before the application has been made.
It also stipulates that mining companies could offset environmental damage to wetlands by restoring wetlands elsewhere.
Iron County is where mining company Gogebic Taconite has expressed an interest, it currently has one of the highest unemployment rates in the state.
But State Senator Dave Hansen (D-Green Bay) has said Wisconsin needs jobs faster than a mine can be created.
"We need some real creative job creation now -- not 7-10 years down the road, if ever," said Hansen.
Moving forward, a series of public hearings will be held about the bill to gather input before going to lawmakers.
