Given the sound and fury of the past fortnight, it?s hard not to conclude that the messiness of the eventual Cyprus bailout is another inflection point in the whole euro crisis. For most observers, including Mr Dijsselbloem it seems, it ups the ante again on several fronts ? 1) possible bank contagion via nervy senior creditors and depositors fearful of bail-ins at the region?s weakest institutions; 2) an unwelcome rise in the cost of borrowing for European banks who remain far more levered than US peers and are already grinding down balance sheets to the detriment of the hobbled European economy; and 3) likely heavy economic and social pressures in Cyprus going forward that, like Greece, increase euro exit risk to some degree. Add reasonable concerns about the credibility and coherence of euro policymaking during this latest episode and a side-order of German/Dutch ?orthodoxy? in sharp relief and it all looks a bit rum again.
Yet the reaction of world markets has been relatively calm so far. Wall St is still stalking record highs through it all for example as signs of the ongoing US recovery mount. So what gives? Today?s price action was interesting in that it started to show investors discriminating against European assets per se ? most visible in the inability of European stocks to follow Wall St higher and lunge lower in euro/dollar exchange rate. European bank stocks and bonds have been knocked back relatively sharply this week post-Dijsselbloem too. If this decoupling pattern were to continue, it will remain a story of the size of the economic hit and relative underperformance. But that would change if concerns morphed into euro exit and broader systemic fears and prepare for global markets at large to feel the heat again too. We?re not back there yet with the benefit of the doubt on OMTs and pressured policy reactions still largely conceded. But many of the underlying movements that might feed system-wide stresses ? what some term a ?slow panic? like deposit shifts etc ? will be impossible to monitor systematically by investors for many weeks yet and so nervy times are ahead as we enter Q2 after the Easter break.
Cyprus and European banks aside, next week will be about the US employment report and three of the Big Four central banks meeting Thurs. Will the ECB respond to the banking sector and consumer sentiment threats and ease rates or monetary conditions? It has plenty of real sector and inflation evidence already that Q1 underwhelmed in euro. The BoJ meeting will be as important with new governor Haruhiko Kuroda at the helm for the first time amid intense interest in how he will pursue the bank?s new aggressive reflation mandate.

(Reuters) - Irreverent U.S. cable television series "Girls" and "Louie" on Wednesday headlined the winners of the annual Peabody Awards, the oldest and one of the top honors in broadcasting.
The awards recognize excellence in television and radio broadcasting, as well as by webcasters, producing organizations and individuals.
HBO's "Girls," which has earned creator and star Lena Dunham, 26, two Golden Globe awards and a slew of Emmy nominations, was lauded by the Peabody panel for its "singular, decidedly unglamorous take on sex and the single girl."
Comedian Louis C.K.'s "Louie," a cult hit on FX of unconnected story lines and vignettes about a single father in the entertainment business, was praised as a "milestone of comedic reach and candor."
The Peabody panel, which also honors international and local programs, awarded a prize to WVIT-TV, an NBC affiliate in West Hartford, Connecticut, for its coverage of the elementary school mass shootings in December in nearby Newtown.
Other notable winners include British broadcaster ITV's documentary on the late BBC presenter Jimmy Savile that explored allegations of decades-long sexual abuse by the once beloved star.
The BBC science-fiction drama "Doctor Who" won an Institutional Peabody Award for its ability to evolve with the times over its some 50 years in production.
Producer Lorne Michaels, the driving force behind NBC sketch comedy series "Saturday Night Live," won an individual Peabody Award for career achievement.
The website SCOTUSblog.com, which provides analysis and archival material on the U.S. Supreme Court, also won an award and was praised as a one-stop shop for information on the court.

California?s Proposition 8 encourages and supports the union of one man and one woman, as distinct from other interpersonal relationships, by giving it alone the name ?marriage.? This is rationally related to legitimate state interests for several reasons.
First, as a matter of simple biology, the union of one man and one woman is the only union capable of creating new life. Second, the People of California could reasonably conclude that a home with a mother and a father is the optimal environment for raising children, an ideal that Proposition 8 encourages and promotes. Given both the unique capacity for reproduction and unique value of homes with a mother and father, it is reasonable for a State to treat the union of one man and one woman as having a public value that is absent from other intimate interpersonal relationships.
While this Court has held that laws forbidding private, consensual, homosexual conduct between adults lack a rational basis, it does not follow that the government has a constitutional duty to encourage or endorse such conduct. Thus, governments may legitimately decide to further the interests of opposite-sex unions only. Similarly, minimum standards of rationality under the Constitution do not require adopting the lower court?s incoherent definition of ?marriage? as merely a ?committed lifelong relationship,? which is wildly over-inclusive, empties the term of its meaning, and leads to absurd results.
The lower court?s definition of ?marriage? also fails to reflect the deference to legislative decision-making that characterizes rational basis analysis generally. This is particularly egregious in a context where deference to States is especially warranted, both because marriage is a traditional concern of the States, and because ongoing controversies about marriage are currently working their way through reasonable democratic processes, yielding a range of results.
The combined force of these objectives argues for upholding Proposition 8, even if this Court were to apply a higher level of scrutiny. Marriage, understood as the union of one man and one woman, is not an historical relic, but a vital and foundational institution of civil society today. The government interests in continuing to encourage and support it are not merely legitimate, but compelling. No other institution joins together persons with the natural ability to have children, to assure that those children are properly cared for. No other institution ensures that children will at least have the opportunity of being raised by their mother and father together. Societal ills that flow from the dissolution of marriage and family would not be addressed?indeed, they would only be aggravated?were the government to fail to reinforce the union of one man and one woman with the unique encouragement and support it deserves.
Proposition 8 is not rendered invalid because some of its supporters were informed by religious or moral considerations. Many, if not most, of the significant social and political movements in our Nation?s history were based on precisely such considerations. Moreover, the argument to redefine marriage to include the union of persons of the same sex is similarly based on a combination of religious and moral considerations (albeit ones that are, in our view, flawed). As is well established in this Court?s precedent, the coincidence of law and morality, or law and religious teaching, does not detract from the rationality of a law.
Finally, redefining marriage?particularly as a matter of constitutional law, rather than legislative process?not only threatens principles of federalism and separation of powers, but would have a widespread adverse impact on other constitutional rights, such as the freedoms of religion, conscience, speech, and association. Affirmance of the judgment below would create an engine of conflict in this area, embroiling this Court and lower courts in a series of otherwise avoidable disputes?pitting constitutional right squarely against constitutional right?for years to come.

'The Role of the Intestinal Microbiome in Promoting Pancreatic Carcinogenesis'
New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD) and New York University School of Medicine (SOM) researchers have been awarded a four-year $840,864 collaborative grant by the Lustgarten Foundation to investigate a potential link between pancreatic cancer development and endogenous gut microbiota.
The co-investigators, Deepak Saxena, MS, PhD, Assistant Professor, Basic Science and Craniofacial Biology at NYUCD, and George Miller, MD, Assistant Professor; Departments of Surgery and Cell Biology at the SOM, seek to explore the links between the intestinal microbiome, Toll-like receptors (TLRs), and pancreatic cancer.
"Endogenous gut microbiota have recently been appreciated as important regulators of homeostasis in the healthy individual and contributors toward disease during microbiotic imbalance," said Saxena. "The microbiome is also emerging as a contributor to carcinogenesis in extra-pancreatic malignancies such as colon and liver cancer. However, there has been no direct link between pancreatic cancer development and endogenous gut microbiota," he noted.
There are tangential data, however, that support such an association. For example, the oral microbiome in patients with pancreatic cancer has been found to substantially differ from control subjects. Preliminary data suggest that the intestinal microbiome may be an important regulator of pancreatic cancer development in at-risk individuals.
The study proposes to:
Define the evolving intestinal microbiome in mice during pancreatic cancer development and progression as well as determine whether humans with pancreatic cancer harbor a distinct microbiome compared with age-matched control patients
Directly test whether endoluminal bacteria can affect pancreatic oncogenesis and determine whether selectively modulating the microbiome alters the rate of tumor progression
Test the hypothesis that luminal pathogens affect pancreatic tumorigenesis specifically via TLR ligation
"Our experiments will provide critical new information on the mechanism of pancreatic carcinogenesis in at-risk hosts and, as such, will provide guidance for pancreatic cancer prevention and possibly treatment of incipient disease," said Saxena.
"Based on our past research, we postulate that specific pathogenic gut bacteria drive pancreatic carcinogenesis in at-risk individuals via TLR activation," said Miller.
As a part of their grant, Drs. Saxena and Miller will be attending and presenting at the annual Lustgarten Scientific Conference to be held October 20-22, 2013, at the Banbury Center on Long Island NY.
