Obama, Romney hit the trail after the debate and more to watch

President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney will be back on the campaign trail Wednesday following a debate that at times felt like a verbal fistfight.

Obama produced a much more assertive performance at the Hofstra University clash, and Romney maintained the energetic demeanor that chalked up a win for him in the first showdown.

The buzz Wednesday will focus on whether Obama's attack style Tuesday night will counter what was widely panned as a lackluster presentation in the first debate. It also will focus on whether Romney came away from the second debate maintaining the momentum he picked up in the first one. And, of course, there will be a lot of talk about who told the truth, and about how CNN's Candy Crowley did as moderator.

Obama will campaign Wednesday in Iowa and Ohio, while Romney will head to Virginia. And Vice President Biden will stump in Colorado and Nevada, and Romney running mate Paul Ryan will be joined by Condoleezza Rice at a rally in Ohio.

Biden also gives his reaction to the second presidential debate in interviews on ABC's "Good Morning America," CBS' "This Morning," and NBC's "Today."

Also worth noting Wednesday: Bill Clinton attends a New York fundraiser for Obama; Tagg Romney campaigns in North Carolina and Craig Romney in Colorado for their father; and Speaker of the House John Boehner heads to Iowa to campaign for Romney.

And then there is this: First lady Michelle Obama tapes an interview Wednesday for broadcast on Friday's "LIVE with Kelly and Michael."

How would you change the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight?

Image

Barnes & Noble's Simple Touch with Glowlight was here long before Amazon's glow-in-the-dark offering, and has found its way onto plenty of your nightstands. We thought it was great, except wishing it was cheaper and had 3G, and since the company has remedied the former if not the latter gripe. However, has the last six months of reading been totally blissful for you? We're inviting you to place yourself in the hirsute shoes of CEO William Lynch and tell us what you'd change if you were in charge.

Scientists identify mammal model of bladder regeneration

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? While it is well known that starfish, zebrafish and salamanders can re-grow damaged limbs, scientists understand very little about the regenerative capabilities of mammals. Now, researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center's Institute for Regenerative Medicine report on the regenerative process that enables rats to re-grow their bladders within eight weeks.

In PLOS ONE, a peer-reviewed, online publication, the scientists characterize this unique model of bladder regeneration with the goal of applying what they learn to human patients.

"A better understanding of the regenerative process at the molecular and cellular level is a key to more rapid progress in applying regenerative medicine to help patients," said George Christ, Ph.D., senior researcher and professor of regenerative medicine at Wake Forest Baptist.

In a previous study by Christ's team, research in rats showed that when about 75 percent of the animals' bladders were removed, they were able to regenerate a complete functional bladder within eight weeks. The current study focused on how the regeneration occurs.

"There is very little data on the mechanisms involved in organ regeneration in mammals," said Christ. "To our knowledge, bladder regeneration holds a unique position -- there is no other mammalian organ capable of this type of regeneration."

The ability of the liver to grow in size when lobes are removed is sometimes referred to as regeneration, but this is a misnomer, said co-author Bryon Petersen, Ph.D., who was a professor of regenerative medicine at Wake Forest Baptist during the period the research occurred. Instead, through a proliferation of cells, the remaining tissue grows to compensate for the lost size. In contrast, the hallmark of true regeneration is following nature's "pattern" to exactly duplicate size, form and function, Petersen said.

"If we can understand the bladder's regenerative process, the hope is that we can prompt the regeneration of other organs and tissues where structure is important -- from the intestine and spinal cord to the heart," said Petersen.

The current study showed that the animals' bodies responded to injury by increasing the rate at which certain cells divided and grew. The most notable proliferative response occurred initially in the urothelium, the layer of tissue that lines the bladder.

As the proliferative activity in the bladder lining waned, it continued elsewhere: in the fibrous band (lamina propria) that separates the bladder lining from the bladder muscles and in the bladder muscle itself.

The researchers have several theories about how the process works, said Christ. One possibility is that cells in the bladder lining transition and become a type of stem cell that can proliferate throughout the bladder. Other theories are that cells in the bladder lining signal other cells to replicate and that injury prompts stem cells to arrive through the blood stream to repair the bladder damage.

In future studies, the scientists will work to identify the exact regenerative process and will expand the work into mice. The ability to breed mice that lack specific genes will enable the team to explore how genes and proteins may affect the regenerative process and possibly help identify therapies to prompt regeneration.

The research was supported by the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases under award number R21DK081832.

Co-researchers were Charles C. Peyton, M.D., lead author, David Burmeister, Ph.D., and Karl-Erik Andersson, M.D., Ph.D., of Wake Forest Baptist. Peterson is now at the University of Florida and an adjunct professor at Wake Forest Baptist.

Neuroscientist: Newsweek Guy Sounds Delusional About Heaven ...

> Science > Neuroscientist: Newsweek Guy Sounds Delusional About Heaven?Experience

If you pay attention to the Internet, you?ve probably seen commentary on the Newsweek article about heaven written by a?neurosurgeon.

-

Sam Harris, who has a PhD in?neuroscience, rips this guy (and the integrity of Newsweek) a new one.

Everything?absolutely everything?in Alexander?s account rests on repeated assertions that his visions of heaven occurred while his cerebral cortex was ?shut down,? ?inactivated,? ?completely shut down,? ?totally offline,? and ?stunned to complete inactivity.? The evidence he provides for this claim is not only inadequate?it suggests that he doesn?t know anything about the relevant brain science?

Alexander believes that his E. coli-addled brain could not have produced his visions because they were too ?intense,? too ?hyper-real,? too ?beautiful,? too ?interactive,? and too drenched in significance for even a healthy brain to conjure. He also appears to think that despite their timeless quality, his visions could not have arisen in the minutes or hours during which his cortex (which surely never went off) switched back on. He clearly knows nothing about what people with working brains experience under the influence of psychedelics.

I think what Sam Harris is saying is, ?I?ve totally done DMT.?

-

I like Sam Harris a lot. I don?t always agree with him but think his simple writing and speaking, while kind of boring, is really effective. This article is probably the most outraged I?ve ever heard his tone. Probably because the guy writing the original article is supposed to be highly educated in brain science.

Anyway, I think I?ve posted this before, but here?s a free printable poster of list of contradictions in the Bible from Sam?s website:

Despite some issues, demand for the iPhone 5 is at an all-time high

Despite some issues, demand for the iPhone 5 is at an all-time high

Despite problems with Maps and complaints about the new Lightning connector, there is increased demand for the iPhone 5 than the iPhone 4S this time last year, a new survey finds. Conducted by 451 Research and ChangeWave Research, the survey of 4,270 primarily North American consumers, the survey shows that despite the attention given to these issues by the press, they barely seem to concern customers. In all, 32% of those surveyed said that they were likely to get the iPhone 5, up from 22.5% for the 4S a year ago. Of those unlikely to buy the phone, 61% responded that their current phone was good enough.

When it comes to Maps, the survey asked iPhone 5 and iOS 6 users if they had found any porblems in their use of Apple Maps, with 90% of respondents saying that they did not have any problems. In fact, only 3% of respondents reported their Maps experience as a very big problem. When asking those unlikely to buy the iPhone 5 for the reason why, 0% said it was because of reports of problems with Maps.

Additionally, iPhone 5 buyers were also asked about the Lightning connector. While a sizeable portion of respondents, 37%, did say that the change in connector was a problem, the majority did not, with 31% saying it was ?Not Much of a Problem, and 26% saying ?No Problem at All.?

None of this is to say that there are not problems with Maps, because there are, and in many cases they are serious ones. Apple needs to fix them as soon as possible and they are working to do just that. We can?t also say that the new Lightning connector isn?t an inconvenience to those who already have a lot of accessories. But what this does tell us is that sometimes these issues get blown out of proportion. We can?t say with a lot of confidence that this is going to keep a lot of people from buying iPhones.

It also tells us that despite what some people in the tech press say, onsumers don't seem to think that the iPhone 5 is boring at all. Every year, each new iPhone is more popular than the one that preceeded it, and that pattern shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, it seems to be speeding up.

Ruiz gives Guatemala 2-1 over Jamaica in qualifier

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:31 a.m. ET Oct. 13, 2012

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) -Carlos Ruiz scored in the 85th minute to give Guatemala a 2-1 win over Jamaica on Friday night in a World Cup qualifier.

Luton Shelton converted a 61st-minute penalty to tie it for Jamaica after Carlos Figueroa scored in the 15th to put Guatemala up 1-0.

Guatemala tied the United States atop Group A in the semifinal round of qualifying from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Both teams have 10 points and can advance if they draw with each other on Tuesday night in Kansas City, Kan.

Jamaica has seven points, and needs to beat Antigua and Barbuda and then hope to win a tiebreaker, probably goal differential, with the US or Guatemala on goal differential to advance to the final round of qualifying. Jamaica is even on goal differential, while the Americans and Guatemalans are each at plus-3.

Zombicide and All Things Zombie Reviews (Board Games) :: Games ...

Starting this month we?ll be expanding our games coverage with regular board game reviews. As part of Zombie Week, board game aficianado Charlie Hall looks at two recent zombie-themed board games.

The recent rise of the undead has given me, an avid board gamer, the opportunity to introduce the hobby to friends and family who may have never been interested before. People are hungry for the apocalypse, and I am happy to sate that hunger with delicious zombie-themed board games. Two titles in particular have come across my desk and I wanted to use them to kick-off this semi-regular column in shambling style.

Zombicide

The result of a wildly successful Kickstarter effort in May, Zombicide is published by CoolMiniOrNot and designed by Guillotine Games. It was one of those crazy Kickstarter campaigns that just takes off like a rocket, before long pulling in people left and right from clear across the internet. The way they did it was by offering a veritable treasure trove of beautiful miniatures.

minis.jpg
Along the top you?ve got teenager Josh, Wanda the drive-in waitress, Doug the office worker, Phil the sheriff, Amy the goth girl, and Ned the crazed survivalist. Below are your undead. The minis are stunning, with deeply cut details. They are just begging to be painted.

When you break out the box the roles players can inhabit are immediately clear. After a long day at work you are already half-way into Doug?s shoes, in all his rage-filled glory from Falling Down. You can?t wait to occupy the pasty purple shell that is Amy, whose goth-inspired shitkicker boots require references to NCIS and smart ass comments to be properly enjoyed. Each character has their own skill set as well, with sheriff Phil being the only one to start with a firearm and homeless Ned being great at scavenging useful kit from even the dingiest of corners.

Each player?s turn is divided into actions, and the number of actions you can take increases with the more zombies you kill. A counter keeps track of your tally at the top of your character card. Actions can include searching buildings for weapons, starting and driving an abandoned car, or attacking the undead with an exotic mixture of melee and ranged weapons. Good times were had during several of my play sessions when a chainsaw was let loose indoors. Each weapons card tells you how many dice to roll, and the number you have to beat to hit. The fun comes in mixing and matching survivors and their inventory items at the time to create streak-like runs across the map, or fight your way out of a deadly corner.

Eight zombie sculpts give the teaming hordes some character as well. Zombies include business men, waitresses, and even a guy in a wifebeater that looks vaguely like Michaelangelo?s David. Runners, fast zombies that move at twice the rate of others, are yuppie joggers doomed to spend the afterlife in those stupid shorts and hoodies, their iDevices still on their withered hip. The giant boss figure is really just a hapless tourist, whose hulking undead frame has grown around his camera strap. Unable to fit through doorways in search of food, the terrifying creature has walked through plate glass windows and still has razor sharp hunks of glass protruding from its back.

But before you have time to make sense of the destruction on every inch of the three foot square board the zombies are on top of you. This cooperative game is fast, and things will go pear shaped quickly when massive waves of the undead come cascading down the street. Often the best solution is to steal a car and drive directly into their midst.

car 2 zombicide.jpg
Phil was amazed how well Wanda could drive with the roller skates on. But not nearly as amazed with how much blood was on the windshield.

This cooperative game can make old friends out of new acquaintances in just the few hours it takes to play. Set up is quick, and the rules are easy to explain. You actually gain powers the more zombies you kill. What?s not to like?

Rating: 9.4 Fun, addictive game play makes this a winner. At $90 retail however it?s a bit steep for the average board game, but for this many miniatures it?s actually a wonderful deal.

All Things Zombie

All Things Zombie, designed by Ed Teixeira and developed by Mark H. Walker?s Lock?n Load Publishing, will look weird to those inexperienced with this genre of board games. Instead of loads of plastic minis like Zombicide, this box contains two sheets of punch out cardboard chits. But don?t judge: This is not only one of the prettiest collection of chits you?re going to find on the market, but the gameplay in this box is rock solid.

banner.jpg

You and your friends will take on seedy roles way out in the Nevada desert. You can be a hooker or a steel-jawed Navy retiree, a scientist or an assassin. Some are hardened veterans of the zombie wars, cool and calm under any circumstance. The rest are city folk who should not be allowed around sharp objects, let alone firearms. They?re fun roles to play, and the desert setting is an open landscape to fill with your imagination. The game comes with solo play rules, cooperative skirmish rules, a multiplayer campaign, and a competitive multiplayer mode, making it one of those rare Swiss Army games that can be bent to your needs in any given social situation.

The game mechanic is fairly straightforward, but will benefit from a single person learning the rules ahead of time and just telling people to throw dice for a few rounds and narrating to them what happens. You?ll move around hexes on a bird?s eye view map of an urban area, searching for loot and dodging monsters.

drugs all things zombie.jpg
Delicious, nutritious drugs. Beck found a handful of pills inside this dollar store and popped a few. She?ll have an advantage to her tests for the next round.

Essentially the game is a series of tests. You round a corner and see a pack of undead heading your way. Do you stand fast and snap off a few rounds, or do you turn and run for your life? Another survivor is firing on your position in the hospital. Can you stand up to the fire and shoot back?

tonya all things zombie.jpg
Tonya is a crafty veteran of the zombie wars, denoted by the star on her marker. She can dish it out as well as she can take it. That?s a stack of about 20 zombies she?s going to melee this round. Zombies are attracted to survivors, and to gunfire, so sometimes shoving off a mass of undead is the better move than unloading your gun into a crowd a few spaces away.

Rating: 9.0 Deep strategic game play, including solo, cooperative, and competitive matches. A solid base mechanic that is flexible enough for many unique situations. Big learning curve, but well worth the time invested.

In my opinion what makes the zombie fad so big right now is people?s isolation from each other. It?s almost like we need a little disaster to feel alive again, to create the groups of kindred souls we need to feel human. Hopefully the teams you build with your friends and family in these zombie board games will help bring a little light to your corner of the world.

Zombicide was designed by Guillotine Games and published by Cool Mini or Not. All Things Zombie was designed by Ed Teixeira and published by Lock?n Load Publishing.

AVADirect Clevo W110ER

Objectively speaking, the AVADirect Clevo W110ER ($1,129.05 direct as tested) is an impressive feat of engineering: a compact, 11.6-inch laptop with enough chops to pump out impressive frame rates in visually intensive games without so much as breaking a sweat. In reality, though it faces some pretty stiff competition, with other contenders in its class sporting similar form factors while also boasting higher benchmark scores. That said, out test unit as configured costs less than its competitors, so for gamers on a budget who choose performance over cool designs, it's worth checking out.

Design and Features
Like the Maingear Pulse 11 and the Eurocom Monster 1.0, the Clevo W110ER is built into the Clevo W110ER chassis, so it's not the most distinctively designed system available. Far from the striking design seen on, say, the Alienware m11x r3, the Clevo W110ER's industrial, utilitarian aesthetic is almost aggressively bland, and doesn't feature so much as a logo or inscription to indicate its make or model (by contract, the Maingear Pulse at least features a logo on its lid). Regardless of its aesthetic leanings, though, at 8.5 by 11.5 by 1.5 inches (HWD) and weighing only 3.76 pounds, the AVADirect certainly earns plaudits for portability despite its thick, slab-like profile.

The dark grey-finished chassis sports a rubbery texture on the lid, palm rest, and, curiously, the trackpad. Though a rubbery trackpad theoretically increases accuracy in gaming by providing a grip, it was fairly frustrating for ordinary use. On more than one occasion, I inadvertently selected text or dragged and dropped icons due to the extra pressure I was forced to exert on the trackpad to counter the friction created between my fingers and the surface. On the other hand, the mouse buttons, though somewhat clacky, were mercifully smoother, providing my fingers with a welcome tactile respite whenever the rubber texture became a source of frustration. While the chiclet-style keyboard takes a little getting used to because of its understandably small size, it's solidly built, exhibiting no noticeable flexing and boasting springy keys with quick response rates.

The Clevo W110ER's 11.6-inch display has a maximum resolution of 1,366 by 768. Even though its glossy?and thus, highly reflective?finish isn't ideal for gaming, the screen looks great, exhibiting bright colors and crisp text. Likewise, the speakers, which are tucked away in the right and left underside of the system, confounded expectations. They pumped out sounds at a louder volume that one would normally expect from such a diminutive system. Naturally, they won't tip the Richter scale, but they do a more than adequate job of filling a small room with sound.

The Clevo W110ER doesn't have much by way of ports, which is understandable given the limited real estate available on the chassis. There's a multicard reader on the front as well as a USB 3.0 port on the right side. Most of the action's on the left side, where you'll find a full-size HDMI port, VGA, Ethernet port, and two USB 3.0 ports.

One of the benefits of purchasing a system from a custom outfit like AVADirect is that you won't get a system bogged down with the kind of preloaded software that gamers immediately uninstall. Accordingly, the Clevo W110ER's 750GB 7,200RPM hard drive is mercifully free of bloatware and ready for gaming right out of the box.

Performance
AVADirect Clevo W110ER Our review unit was outfitted with a 2.30GHz Intel Core i7-3610QM processor and a whopping 16GB DDR3 RAM. Like the rest of its class (with the exception of the Alienware M11x r3), it also packed a 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT GPU. Its score of 3,412 points on our PCMark 7 test landed it behind the Maingear Pulse 11 (3,985 points) and, by an even wider margin, the Eurocom Monster (4,273 points). As far as multimedia tasks go, the AVADirect's benchmark scores hovered in the vicinity of its peers. It completed our Handbrake video encoding test in 1 minute 18 seconds, the same amount of time as the Alienware M14x R2 (1:18) and only slightly behind the class-leading Eurocom Monster (1:14). Meanwhile, its Cinebench R11.5 score of 4.66 points trumped both the Maingear Pulse 11 (4.20 points) and the Alienware M11x R3 (1.69 points), but ultimately lagged behind the Eurocom Monster (5.26 points). The AVADirect completed out Photoshop CS5 test in 4 minutes 41 seconds, outpacing both the Maingear Pulse 11 (5:03) and the Alienware M11x r3 (5:23) but still trailing behind the Alienware M14x R2 (3:20).

Naturally, graphical prowess is the paramount consideration when purchasing a custom-made gaming rig. In that regard the Clevo W110ER didn't disappoint?even if it doesn't always come out at the top of its class. Its 3DMark 11 scores (3,828 points in Entry-level settings; 726 points in Extreme settings) hovered near the top of its class, coming within striking distance of the class-leading Eurocom Monster (3,964 and 726, respectively) and the Maingear Pulse 11 (3,868 and 724, respectively). In our Crysis benchmark test, the AVADirect performed with gusto, and its 74 frames per second (fps) in medium-quality settings at 1,024-by-768 resolution surpassed that of the Maingear Pulse 11 (69fps) and nipped at the heels of the Eurocom Monster (86fps). Similarly, the Clevo W110ER performed well on our Lost Planet 2 benchmark tests; in medium quality-settings at 1,024-by-768 resolution, its DX9 performance (67fps) surpassed all of its competitors, save for the class-leading Alienware M14x R2 (86fps), while its DX11 performance (61fps) fell squarely in between the Alienware M14x R2 (62 fps) and the Maingear Pulse 11 (60 fps).

AVADirect Clevo W110ER

The Clevo W110ER is equipped with Nvidia's Optimus technology, which is meant to extend the life of its removable 62.16Wh battery by automatically turning off the discrete GPU whenever executing non-3D-related tasks. We didn't notice a difference. Its battery life was lackluster even by the low standards of gaming standards, lasting a scant 3 hours 17 minutes on our MobileMark battery rundown test. While this was roughly on par with both the Maingear Pulse 11 (3:29) and the Eurocom Monster (3:30), it was school by both the Alienware M14x R2 (4:40) and, to a much larger extent, the Alienware M11x r3 (8:03).

Although the AVADirect Clevo W110ER isn't the quickest in its class, it's still a formidable and highly portable gaming rig that costs less than its competitors, making it a good choice for budget-conscious gamers that place performance over designs. Gamers who have extra cash to spare, though, should stick with Maingear Pulse 11, whose overall faster performance justifies its slightly higher price tag as well as its status as our Editors' Choice for ultraportable gaming laptops.

Goldman CEO: I'll pay 5 percent more tax for budget deal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Chief Executive Lloyd Blankfein on Thursday became the latest big-name business leader to pledge to pay a steeper tax rate - 5 percent more, he said - in exchange for a long-term bipartisan deal in Congress to keep the country from falling off the "fiscal cliff."

Blankfein is part of a group of corporate executives who have raised nearly $30 million to support a deal to avoid the nearly $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts set to take effect at the end of the year.

Asked if he would pay 5 percent more in taxes if it became necessary for Congress to reach a deal, he said "Of course ... I don't know anybody who wouldn't."

Blankfein, who characterized his political views as "center left," was interviewed Thursday along with Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson on CNBC.

Blankfein also said there would be a "huge" positive impact on the economy if a bipartisan compromise were reached.

"I'd be a buyer of the market," he said.

Simpson and Bowles were co-chairs of a bipartisan commission established by President Barack Obama that in December, 2010 came up with a comprehensive proposal to reduce the budget deficit, which has been topping $1 trillion for several years.

The commission's report has some support among Democrats and Republicans as a deficit-reduction model, though when it was initially proposed, Obama did not act on it and most House Republicans opposed it.

Both Simpson and Bowles have been traveling the country with the corporate group to push for a similar proposal.

They are also trying to sway a group of Senators known as the "Gang of Eight," - four Democrats and Republicans each, who are working on a bipartisan deal and have embraced the model.

Despite the push for a broad deficit-cutting deal to avoid the fiscal cliff, Congress has put off any decisions until after the November 6 presidential and congressional elections.

That will leave lawmakers only a few weeks to act before the automatic cuts and tax increases are triggered under a budget law passed by Congress in 2011.

Budget and tax issues are expected to be among the big issues addressed during Thursday night's vice presidential debate.

DIVERSE BUSINESS GROUPS

The business community, while eager for lower taxes, splinters over the specifics of which tax breaks to eliminate.

More than half of all businesses are not corporations like Goldman Sachs, but are organized so they pay taxes at individuals' rates. These include small businesses, as well as bigger firms like law firms and hedge funds.

"Everyone is more comfortable giving away someone else's money," said Dirk Von Dongen, president of the National Association of Wholesalers and Distributors, whose make-up includes 60 percent of pass-through businesses.

Another skeptic is Brian Reardon, a former economic adviser to Republicans and now head of a trade group lobbying for such businesses.

"The challenge with that assumption is it assumes you raise rates and get more revenues that is going to go to deficit reduction," Reardon said.

The corporate tax rate is not changing at the end of the year, though most individual income taxes could increase. Both Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney support lowering the top 35 percent statutory rate.

Greek unemployment rises above 25 percent

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Unemployment in Greece hit a record high of 25.1 percent in July as the country's financial crisis continues to exact its heavy toll, official figures showed Thursday.

And all indications are that unemployment in Greece will be heading higher for some to come. The country is widely-predicted to enter a sixth year of a recession, that's already seen economic output slump by a quarter and youth unemployment push way above 50 percent.

"This is a very dramatic result of the recession," said Angelos Tsakanikas, head of research at Greece's IOBE economic research foundation. Tsakanikas added that he does not expect employment to pick up significantly for at least a year.

After losing access to international money markets and nearly defaulting on its mountain of debt, Greece has survived on international bailouts since May 2010.

However, solvency comes at a harsh price: To secure and continue receiving the loans, Athens imposed tough austerity measures, such as spending cuts and tax increases, in an attempt to get its public finances in order.

More austerity is due if it's not to default on its debts and potentially abandon its membership of the euro currency.

The vital rescue loan flows have been frozen until Greece's conservative-led government manages to save a further ?13.5 billion ($17.4 billion) over the next two years.

Finance Minister Yiannis Stournaras will hold new talks Thursday evening with representatives of the European Union, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank. The so-called troika has to sign off the package for the release of the funds.

Some evidence emerged Thursday that the government's strategy is working on one front, at least. Finance Ministry figures showed that the deficit-busting effort is on track despite lower-than-anticipated revenues.

The ministry said the January-September deficit was ?12.64 billion, lower than the ?13.5 billion target. Although revenues were ?1.3 billion off target, spending was ?2.2 billion less than budgeted.

Nearly three years of belt-tightening have aggravated a recession that has shaved a total 25 percent off economic output since 2008. The contraction is set to continue for at least another year.

Greece's statistical authority said 1.26 million Greeks were jobless in July, with more than 1,000 jobs lost every day over the past year. In the worst-affected 15-24 age group, unemployment was 54.2 percent.

The unemployment rate rose from 24.8 percent in June. In July 2008, a year before Greece's acute financial crisis broke, there were only about 364,000 registered unemployed.

"I'm afraid that unemployment will remain around current levels in 2013 too," said IOBE's Tsakanikas. "Even if economic recovery were to somehow arrive, the process of job creation is always much slower."

Sarah Palin penning health and fitness book with her family | The ...

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and first lady Michelle Obama have at least one thing in common: a public focus on health.

The one-time Republican candidate for vice president, who was recently seen sporting a new, thinner look, is in the process of penning a health and fitness book with her family, People magazine revealed Wednesday.

?Our family is writing a book on fitness and self-discipline focusing on where we get our energy and balance as we still eat our beloved homemade comfort foods!? Palin wrote to the magazine.

Palin was?featured in Runner?s World in 2009 and, in an interview with the magazine, said her family has long been interested in fitness.

?I grew up in a running family. My parents caught the running craze in the mid ?70s, and we grew up doing family runs. I?ve been running now easy for 35 years,? Palin told Runner?s World.

Palin told The Wall Street Journal in 2008 that she and her family also stick to healthy diet.

?My family and I eat a healthy diet heavy in wild Alaskan seafood, moose, caribou and fresh fruit,? she said. ?I guess my biggest pitfall is breakfast. I know it?s the most important meal of the day, but I still haven?t bought into it. I hate to admit it, but a skinny white-chocolate mocha is my staple in the morning.?

Palin is already set to sell her lifestyle to the rest of the country.

?We promise you what we do works and allows a fulfilling quality of life and sustenance anyone can enjoy,? she added to People.

Palin, who often communicates with her supporters on Facebook, has not yet mentioned the new project on her social networking page.

Kristen Reynolds' Fall Favorites! OMBE Center

From the desk of Kristen Reynolds, PT, DPT, PMA-CPT?

Although I?m not an intense football fan like my loved ones, I love the feeling of Football Sundays! Why? Because it brings my family and friends together in a venue that is about relaxation and sharing food! And with relaxation comes the opportunity to spend time in the kitchen doing some ?clean cooking.?

Before walking down to the local football stadium to watch my nephews play, I make hot chocolate for my travel mug. It is easy to remember or modify for taste, but for one serving, I typically combine 12 oz unsweetened almond milk, 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder, 2 tbsp agave syrup, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp vanilla, and a dash of sea salt (1/8 tsp cayenne optional) into a pot and warm over medium heat. Stir constantly with a whisk. Pour into travel mug and enjoy!

After the games, it?s time to prep lunch, dinner, and dessert. Check out these pins for some of my recent fall favorites:

Chicken Stew with Butternut Squash and Quinoa

?

Spaghetti Squash Spaghetti & Italian Paleo Meatballs

?

?

Pumpkin-Carrot Bars with Cream Cheese Frosting

(I modify this one a bit oat flour, stevia, organic pumpkin and a greek yogurt substitute recipe for cream cheese swirl from www.cupcakeproject.com)

Like Ryan and Biden, U.S. Catholics are deeply divided

CHICAGO (Reuters) - In just hours, two Catholic candidates for vice president of the United States will square off - opponents in an election year that has seen the Roman Catholic Church flex its political muscle more forcefully than ever.

Paul Ryan and Joe Biden - one a social-values conservative, the other a fierce advocate for social programs - represent the deep divisions among American Catholics, who have been an important swing vote for decades.

A Reuters/Ipsos Poll conducted last weekend reveals the divergent opinions in the Church and shows that Catholics are divided equally between Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney, with each winning just under 40 percent of voters. (http://bit.ly/Qfvay7)

As America's largest religious denomination, Catholics have long been a bellwether, picking the winner of the popular vote in every presidential election since 1972.

In the 2008 election, Obama won 54 percent of the Catholic vote. But this time, Catholics are hearing stronger advocacy on the conservative side of some issues from U.S. bishops, particularly regarding same-sex marriage and contraception. This troubles liberal Catholics, who feel Church leaders are turning too far to the right.

"There's a profound wrestling going on in the Church right now over what it means to be authentically Catholic," said John Gehring, Catholic program director for Faith in Public Life, a liberal advocacy group. "I'm worried that the Church is becoming a less friendly place for moderate and progressive Catholics who believe in the social justice mission."

The two vice presidential candidates, who will debate each starting at 9 p.m. Eastern time, embody the conflicts: Biden has been criticized for his support of abortion rights, while some nuns and bishops have objected to the budget plan Ryan put forth earlier this year because of cuts to anti-poverty programs.

Writer and former priest Robert McClory said the stance of U.S. bishops on issues such as same-sex marriage and contraception is partly to blame for the continuing exodus of non-immigrant Catholics from the Church: Lapsed Catholics have become the nation's second-largest religious group, according to the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. The push on sexual morality comes as the Church leadership is still recovering from the child sex abuse scandal.

"You get the feeling that the Church is a ship and that somebody amongst the crew goes down every week and drills another hole in the bottom of the boat, and eventually it's going to be a very serious situation," said McClory. "People are leaving. They're embarrassed."

Conservative voices say bishops are stressing sexual morality issues not because they don't care about poverty or immigrant rights but because church teachings are under attack.

Bishops were enraged over Obama's healthcare mandate, which required Catholic schools and hospitals to carry insurance that provides birth control, forbidden by Church doctrine, for free.

A Pew Research Center poll in August found that Catholics who had heard of bishops' concerns over perceived restrictions on religious liberty share them - by a 56 percent to 36 percent margin. But just 22 percent of Catholics say they have heard a lot about them, and 51 percent of Catholic voters say Obama best reflects their views on issues such as abortion and gay rights.

In Illinois, Springfield Bishop Thomas Paprocki warned his flock in a letter last month of "intrinsic evils" in the Democratic platform's support of abortion and same-sex marriage and said a vote for someone who promotes such actions "places the eternal salvation of your own soul in serious jeopardy."

Archbishop John Myers of Newark, New Jersey, said in a September 14 pastoral letter that those who do not accept Church teachings on marriage should "refrain from receiving Holy Communion."

But Catholics don't always do as they're told.

Parishioners at voter registration tables after a Spanish-language mass outside St. Procopius in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood said their faith doesn't play a big role in their vote. "I don't mix political with the Church," said Rafael Macias, 50, who attends daily Mass and thinks he will vote for Obama.

REVERSAL ON REFORMS?

Reuters polls show a strong independent streak among Catholics. Just 17.3 percent of Catholics think abortion should be illegal in all cases, while 16.6 percent thinks it should be legal in all cases. A total of 35.5 percent of Catholic voters favor same-sex marriage, 34.2 percent favor civil unions and 20.8 percent would allow neither.

Data on birth control is even more striking - a 2011 Guttmacher Institute study found that 98 percent of Catholic women who have had sex used artificial birth control.

Robert Jones, CEO of the Public Religion Research Institute, said the Catholic vote may shift left because of the growing proportion of U.S. Catholics who are Latino - now nearly 40 percent, according to the Catholic News Service. He noted that in 2008, Obama won the Catholic vote 54 to 45 percent - losing among white Catholics 47 percent to 52 percent but winning Latinos 72 percent to 26 percent.

Jones said Catholics don't follow bishops on all issues: "Catholics by and large say they can still be a good Catholics and disagree."

The bishops' growing focus on sexual morality issues comes as the Church celebrates the 50th anniversary of Vatican II, the Second Vatican Council, which started on October 11, 1962, and was intended, as then-Pope John XXIII put it, to open the windows of the Church and let in some fresh air.

Reforms included using the local language at Mass instead of Latin and greater participation by the laity. The changes also affected religious life, with nuns swapping habits for civilian clothes and protesting the death penalty and nuclear war.

Some now see a push back against Vatican II reforms. This year the Vatican rebuked U.S. nuns for focusing too much on social justice issues such as poverty and not enough on abortion and gay marriage.

A DIVERSE DIOCESE

Around one in four Americans are Catholics. The Chicago Archdiocese, the third-largest in the United States with 2.3 million members, reflects the diversity of the modern Church, both in style and in substance.

At St. John Cantius on the city's Near West Side, it still seems like the 1950s, with all the "smells and bells" - a priest chanting Latin with his back to the congregation, altar boys swinging censers and women covering their hair with lace veils.

But at St. Sabina's on the South Side, a gospel choir leads a mostly African-American congregation in hymns, and the sermon is interrupted by outbursts of "Amen!" from the pews. The sometimes controversial pastor, Father Michael Pfleger, leads protests against gun violence.

Some Catholics worship outside official venues. In the city's Boystown neighborhood, Barbara Zeman, a woman priest whose ordination is not recognized by Church leaders, celebrates Mass for a gay and lesbian congregation.

At St. John's, attendee Dan Crout, 75, said that unless you fight to make abortion illegal, you're not Catholic.

"If you're going to consider yourself Catholic, you've got to do what the Church teaches," said Crout, who prefers Latin Mass as "more meaningful."

Laura Singer, 40, whose children go to Catholic school at a Northwest Side parish, thinks you can be a good Catholic and question authority. She supports the ordination of women, for example.

"It's our church - it's not the hierarchy's church," she said.

Star Citizen is Wing Commander creator's new game | Lazygamer ...

Starcitizen

Remember not too long ago, we told you that Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts would be making a triumphant return to gaming, now that the tools to bring his expansive space vision to life is available. We?ve finally got some details on the game.

Called Star Citizen, the PC-only space sim is still in the early stages, but has been under development for the past year. As many of you guessed, it is going to be crowd-funded, but Roberts is eschewing Kickstarter, and doing the begging through his own website.

It wont, however, as some of you surmised, be a free-to-play or subscription based game. Nope, it?ll be a one-time purchase affair, although there will be micro-transactions using in-game credits available for ship customisation.

?In recent years, game designers have stopped innovating and pushing the boundaries of what you can do in this genre,? said Roberts on his site. . ?I plan on bringing that kind of development mentality back into PC gaming and space sims in particular.

?There is a lot of noise out there regarding social and mobile games right now, and I think PC gamers are feeling a little left out of the mix. But the PC is still incredibly capable of presenting an experience that doesn?t take a back seat to any other platform out there, including consoles. With my game, I want PC gamers to stand up, be counted and get excited again about all the great experiences their computer can deliver.?

Gamers, especially those of the old-school are incredibly excited, but publishers aren?t ? which is one reason the game?s being crowd-funded.

?For one, this route takes the traditional game publisher out of the mix and enables us to take the millions of dollars normally used by publishers for a triple-A title and plow them right back into developing the game,? he said. ?Secondly, using our own crowd funding mechanism allows us to reach out to our international fans, who have been devoted followers of my games in the past.

?Thirdly, going direct gets us much closer to our fans and allows us to focus more on the community side, create more updates for our fans and directly interact with them as we are making the game.?

Here?s the game?s reveal trailer, followed by an extended cut showing some rather delightful SPACESHIPS! generated in real time within the game?s engine. Enjoy.
